
In late September or early October, Mexico, the United States, and Canada will formally begin talks to revise the USMCA, as announced by Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard.

He highlighted the importance of the USMCA for Mexico, as 86% of its trade with the United States is tariff-free, an advantage not seen in other US trade agreements.
The USMCA review was originally scheduled for July 1, 2026. However, due to pressure from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who ordered public consultations to begin in February 2025, the process has been brought forward.

If the three countries agree to continue the agreement, it will be automatically extended for another 16 years. Otherwise, annual payments will be made until a consensus is reached or until the agreement expires in 2036.
