Complementarity between Mexico and Taiwan will boost business between both economies

Taiwan is Mexico's ninth largest trade partner and the fifth largest Asian investor, after Japan, South Korea, China and Hong Kong, with a figure that amounts to 1,135 million dollars (mdd), translated into around 300 Taiwanese companies installed in Mexican territory.

Armando Cheng, Taiwan's ambassador to Mexico, talks about the strategies that are being promoted to strengthen the relationship between the two countries. From 2019 to 2021, the bilateral trade volume between Taiwan and Mexico increased from 9,790 to 12,363 million dollars. The trade balance is in favor of Taiwan, which in 2021 totaled 11,215 million dollars, that is, Taiwan exported 11,789 million dollars, while Mexico exported 574 million dollars.

It should be noted that, due to the trade war between the United States and China, the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the entry into force of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) in July 2020, many Taiwanese companies are moving their factories out of China, and Mexico is an advantageous option.

Among the strategic advantages of Mexico are the multiple treaties that develop 13 alliances with 50 countries, including the T-MEC, the strategic geographical position that acts as a transit platform to North America and Latin America and the availability of abundant human resources and high level.

The low labor costs and the proximity to the North American market are seen as opportunities while the insufficient supply of electricity, water and green energy, long waiting times and approval of licenses are challenges to face.

The sectors that have received the most investment from Taiwanese companies are mainly ICT, auto parts, machinery, textiles, furniture, toys and trade. And the states that receive the most investment from Taiwan are Chihuahua (Ciudad Juárez), Baja California (Tijuana), Jalisco, Nuevo León (Monterrey), Tamaulipas, Estado de México, Guanajuato and Mexico City.

The three main items imported by Taiwan from Mexico are: integrated circuits, passenger cars (premium used cars) and telephones. Another emerging sector that can reach a higher degree of development is ICT manufacturing since many Taiwanese companies provide manufacturer services. of original design to US ICT providers.
