Nuevo León ranked second nationally in FDI in 1Q 2021

In the first quarter of 2021, Nuevo León captured 1,015.2 million dollars in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), which represented 9% of the national total, ranking second after Mexico City with 2,202.1 million, which represented 19% of total FDI in the country.

In the first quarter, Guanajuato ranked third in attracting FDI with (969.6 million dollars), Michoacán (964.2 million) and Jalisco (637.8 million).

On the contrary, the states lagging behind were Yucatán (23.9 million), Colima (28.6 million), Campeche (33.8 million), Puebla (36.9 million) and Tlaxcala (50.8 million dollars).

On the other hand, from January to March 2021, the entity's FDI had its worst fall since 2016 (beginning of the current administration), with -31.8% compared to the first quarter of 2020, due to the pandemic and the economy state has recovered slowly due to sanitary restrictions due to Covid-19.

The most dynamic sectors in attracting investment in this first quarter were: commerce with 50% participation, manufacturing industries with 30% and generation, transmission and distribution of electric power, supply of water and gas through pipelines to the final consumer with 12 percent.

Within the manufacturing industry, the subsectors with the highest participation were: manufacture of accessories, electrical appliances and electrical energy equipment with 39%, followed by the beverage and tobacco industry with 39% and manufacture of metal products with 13%.

By country of origin of the investment, Nuevo León received 803 million dollars from the United States in the first three months of 2021, which meant a decrease of 20.6% compared to the same period last year, however, it represented 79% of total investment, followed by the Netherlands with 140.1 million and Spain with 139.3 million.
