US clean energy companies with an interest in the Mexican border

After a meeting with the Government of Mexico, 17 US companies agreed to guarantee investments for the generation of 1,854 megawatts of clean energy, such as solar and wind power.

According to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, companies in the energy sector are exploring the creation of solar parks on the country's northern border with the United States.

In his participation in the Forum of the Major Economies on Energy and Climate, the president announced that they are also analyzing the installation of transmission networks. These will allow the export of electrical energy to California and other states of the American Union.

In this way, the government of the "Fourth Transformation" seems to change its position regarding the electricity sector. Well, the president assured that "he maintains the commitment to produce in 2024, at least, 35% of the consumption in the Mexican territory through clean and renewable sources."

One of the sectors most affected by the lack of electrical infrastructure is the industrial sector.

With a demand for spaces that exceeded 6.6 million square meters in 2021 at the national level (65% more than in 2020), it has created a strong pressure towards services.

Various developers have been forced to include power generation in their cost structures, according to Solili.

Therefore, part of the spending on poles, lines and substations has fallen on them.

Given this scenario, Ricardo Reyes, director of Business Development and Marketing of Veolia Mexico, indicated that it is important to carry out actions that allow the generation of alternative solutions, such as clean energy.

“It has been shown that these can meet the demand that is required worldwide. But, despite being a viable solution, its consumption represents only 13%”, he said.

Finally, he stressed that, even though it is estimated that by 2050 its progress will be 30%, the reality is that without a structure that allows supply efficiency, this will not be enough.

It should be remembered that, in mid-April, the electrical issue was on the table when the reform proposed by President López Obrador was not approved. As a result, the opening to private investment was maintained.

However, the challenge continues for independent producers through the announced revisions to self-supply schemes and contracts.

Added to this is the uncertainty of the gas needed to operate and the gaps in investments in transmission that will impact the development of industrial parks.
