Volkswagen chooses its plants in Mexico to begin global deployment of technologies
Mexico Industry | August 12, 2021 |

Volkswagen started a new digital transformation project at its assembly plants in the United States and Mexico.

As part of the estimated $ 1 billion investment in electric mobility and digitization in North America through 2025, the company is working to bring technologies such as cloud-based industrial software, smart robotics and artificial intelligence to factory operations. .

The German assembler aims to increase the manufacturing throughput of its large-scale vehicle assembly in Chattanooga, United States and Puebla by 30%, as well as improve productivity at its engine plant in Silao, Guanajuato by 2025.

To accelerate its digital drive, Volkswagen is also looking to increase on-site training for its North American workforce.

Johan de Nysschen, COO of Volkswagen Group of America, stated that they are confirming their ambitious digital transformation to make their North American factories the most productive, connected and sustainable.

The transformation is supported by a skilled workforce and high-profile, future-ready jobs throughout North America at its Chattanooga, Puebla and Silao locations.

The unified release of software, artificial intelligence and robotics could allow you to streamline collaboration and improve the overall assembly process and work environment for your employees and suppliers.

This could lead to even more efficient management of material flows, optimized operation of machines and systems, and greater savings in energy consumption for manufacturing-related processes.

The Volkswagen Group's cloud-based Information and Communication Technology (ICT) platform hopes to boost global manufacturing performance by sharing data connections, real-time information and software applications for industrial machinery.

This connectivity will encompass the facilities and the connected providers, which will be 21 Group plants and 13 providers that have already joined this global IT platform.

In terms of robotics, Volkswagen has implemented collaborative robots (cobots) to support its workforce, which carry out final inspection checks and measure the precision of the space. On the Tiguan line in Puebla, a cobot measures 26 control points in less than a minute, the first application of this technology in the Group. It is also expected to assist with welding pattern verification.

Finally, the new artificial intelligence tool, developed in-house in Detroit, will help supervisors manage factory schedules in Chattanooga. This technology reduces the amount of time supervisors spend balancing inputs such as training levels, time off, and other factors, allowing all key variables to be analyzed and suggested schedules provided within minutes of a request.
