Working from the beach, option after the pandemic
El Universal - Puebla | October 13, 2021 |

The Covid-19 crisis led to the mobility of those who could work remotely; real estate tourism was detonated in coastal areas and places near the CDMX, experts say.

The pandemic brought with it several changes in lifestyle and the way of working, which led to a mobility never seen before to cities near Mexico City, as well as to beach sites.

This option became a reality for those who could do home office all the time; some of them still working remotely, to US and Canadian citizens who experienced in the country the opportunity to live and work in a more relaxed environment with a better quality of life.

According to the Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals (AMPI), the pandemic triggered real estate tourism in the Riviera Maya, Baja California, Sonora, Oaxaca, Chiapas and in several Magical Towns.

However, the phenomenon also occurred in areas close to Mexico City such as Morelos, the State of Mexico, Puebla and Querétaro.

The pandemic also caused a revaluation of the home, as it stopped becoming the bedroom to be the workplace, virtual school, gym and kitchen. This renewed interest in acquiring assets and the flexibility provided by technology to work remotely, triggered both the sale and rental of housing.

Mexico is particularly attractive not only for its inhabitants, but also for foreigners, since it has warmer winters, good gastronomy, cultural offerings and a very varied geography that has deserts, beaches, forests and colonial cities.

Among the destinations already preferred, but that rebounded during the pandemic, are Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

Frank Ruiz, director of the Riviera Maya and Mérida for Coldwell Banker, says that the pandemic caused an exodus of residents from cities such as New York to Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen and even Mérida, both to rent and to buy, since in America is increasing the cost of living and rent.

According to Coldwell Banker, in the United States and Canada there is very high inflation in the price of properties and there is no inventory, so the citizens of these countries are selling properties that were previously worth 400 thousand dollars and now went up to 1.2 million .

They are investing that difference in destinations like Mexico.

But not only foreigners are investing; Mexican entrepreneurs from Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara are also acquiring properties in Tulum and the Riviera Maya, since even if they are small studios, apartments or houses, they can be rented for tourism.

Currently, the vacation rental levels in Tulum and Playa del Carmen are at their highest level. There are hotels that even created the workation concept, where you work while on vacation.
