Steel has become an essential input for large buildings in the country, especially in Mexico City, as it has proven to be resistant to earthquakes and despite being more expensive than other materials, it also has a sustainable effect.
Torre Chapultepec Uno located on Paseo de la Reforma avenue is one of the large skyscrapers in the capital that was built mainly with steel and concrete, in order to give it significant resistance which can make it resist earthquakes of up to 9.5 degrees.

Héctor Castañeda, Construction Manager of Torre Chapultepec Uno, indicated that steel mixed with concrete is an ideal mixture for large buildings, especially in regions such as Mexico City, where there is a particular type of soil.
"Steel together with concrete become very flexible (materials) for this type of soil, it is the ideal combination for tall towers... Structurally (Torre Chapultepec Uno) is designed to resist a 9.5-degree earthquake," Castañeda declared in a media tour of Torre Chapultepec Uno and Torre BBVA.
It is estimated that, according to a specialized study by Stanford University, during the 2017 earthquake at least 42 buildings collapsed in Mexico City.
Regarding the Chapultepec One Tower, Castañeda indicated that its construction was completed in September 2019, after an investment of close to 195 million dollars.
This mixed-use building contains 60 levels with a heliport, water reuse systems, 20 levels for office use, a hotel, and 63 Ritz Carlton brand homes. Additionally, it is complemented with restaurants and eight levels of parking.

For Castañeda, the use of steel in facilities of this nature can increase the cost of construction by 25% more than other materials. "It's more expensive, that steel building is more expensive, but it's safer and faster."
According to Gerdau Corsa, both the Chapultepec Tower and the BBVA Tower offer mezzanine heights, which creates efficient areas that generate lighting and natural ventilation. They also have an electrical energy optimization system.
