San Luis Potosí has advantages to host Tesla suppliers, because BMW's project to manufacture electric cars here will generate a block of companies specialized in components for green vehicles. In addition, Nuevo León's water shortages could prevent Tesla's business partners from piling up there.

This is stated by the expert in the automotive sector, César Roy Ocotla, who added that, if these Tesla suppliers seek to supply components not only to that firm but to others, both SLP and other entities in Bajío will have the possibility that these auto parts plants settle in the area.

However, he also clarified that a large part of the investments from Tesla's suppliers will reach Nuevo León and its neighbor Coahuila, in an area closer to the Gigafactory.

The municipality of Santa Catarina is the one that will house the new Tesla plant; It is located 310 kilometers from Matehuala, which is the closest city in Potosí, but only 62 kilometers from Ramos Arizpe and 75 kilometers from Saltillo, cities in Coahuila.

Ocotla explained that in a "circular economy" model, such as the one that these plants have, it is important that the supply is nearby, so it is most likely that most of the companies settle in Nuevo León or Coahuila.

But Tesla's plans also include investing in a battery factory for electric cars, lithium processing and aerospace projects.

Now, if the suppliers plan to supply various parts of the country and the world in a general way and not only the Tesla plant, then San Luis Potosí and other states in the Bajío region could be the destination for these investments, since it would not be required only proximity to Nuevo León.

San Luis Potosí is an interesting state for electric cars, especially after the investment announced by BMW to start manufacturing green vehicles in this entity, which will bring the entity to a different supplier to the one that already exists.

New players will include manufacturers of electric motors, motor housings, electronic components, hardware and artificial intelligence, as these vehicles seek to develop autopilot. Some components are already made here, but they will need to be stronger and more durable, since electric cars are heavier.
