“Now these authorities have the possibility to make planning stop being an area of improvisation or subject to political decisions. From Sedatu we celebrate that today municipalities, metropolitan areas and states have more tools to make planning the basis for a more inclusive and sustainable territorial development, ”Meyer said in a statement.

For his part, the Undersecretary of Urban Development and Housing, Daniel Octavio Fajardo Ortiz, pointed out that the foregoing strengthens local decision-making, since these amendments to the Law will allow these institutes to be the preferred channels to conduct the processes of territorial planning.

With the reforms, there is the possibility for municipalities to freely decide to create and associate with other metropolitan areas to install Planning Institutes in their region.

"These institutes are multidisciplinary technical bodies that help municipalities and states with the analysis of information and decision-making on planning and land use at the local level, which allows planning to have greater technical support with a long-term vision."
