Home appliance manufacturers from China move to Nuevo León

Appliance manufacturers —many of them Chinese— will invest 1,165 million dollars in Nuevo León to regionalize production chains and avoid some tariffs in their trade processes with the United States.

"We have a bag of 1,165 million dollars, which we seek to relocate or generate locally in different products such as steel, electrical, electronic, plastics and a wide variety of services that we always seek to have close by," said Daniel Córdova, president of the Cluster of Appliances of the State of Nuevo León (CLELAC).

In Mexico, they produce air conditioning and heating equipment, white goods such as washing machines and refrigerators, as well as industrial and commercial refrigeration equipment and household goods.

The director of Trane Technologies explained that today there is an opportunity for the appliance industry to grow, since new companies are constantly arriving and there are expansion plans for companies.

Currently, Mexico is the fifth largest producer of household appliances in the world with 14.5 billion dollars, he said.

“The Covid-19 pandemic came to fragment and damage supply chains, which has put Mexico with these new investments, which are coming, as an epicenter for manufacturing and the home appliance sector is no exception,” Baldwin said. Britton, Vice President of CLELAC.

There are very important investments that have been announced in recent months in Nuevo León, for example, the Bosch company made an important bet and another company is building a refrigerator plant for 1,500 jobs and with an investment of 250 million dollars. Hisense and Whirlpool are examples of this.

"The epicenter of nearshoring is a great opportunity, since the Inter-American Development Bank says that Mexico's exports can represent up to an additional 35 billion dollars," said Baldwin Britton.

Going from conventional manufacturing to a knowledge industry, which implies greater innovation in processes, materials and technologies, is the challenge for Mexico and Nuevo León, specifically.
