Leoni expands in Mérida, Yucatán
Cluster Industrial | May 26, 2022 |

The German company dedicated to the supply of harnesses for automotive use, Leoni, arrived in Yucatan in 2017 and by 2018 it was already building its second plant on the Mérida-Campeche highway, opening the market to suppliers of the sector in the Mexican southeast and generating 3 thousand jobs.

The harness maker now contemplates further expanding its production for customers in North America and Asia. This was confirmed by the governor of Yucatan, Mauricio Vila, who visited Germany on a work tour in Europe, where Leoni signed the letter of intent for a new investment that will create between 500 and 1,000 new jobs in the Vive Abitare plants in Yucatan.

Vive Abitare is an industrial real estate developer and was previously benefited from Leoni's investments, both in the construction and equipping of its plants, with “built to suit” or custom-made warehouses.

Leoni has the capacity to produce around 650 car harnesses per day, and they plan to expand that capacity at the two Yucatecan plants, which supply essential parts to automakers such as General Motors and Volvo. The company also manufactures cables for the aerospace, nautical, medical and telecommunications industries.

It currently has a presence in 50 countries, one of them Mexico, where it has facilities in Sonora, Querétaro and Yucatán, the latter of which has been highly efficient due to its infrastructure and logistics, thanks to the connectivity that Puerto Progreso guarantees with the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic United States.
