The second terminal of the Guadalajara airport will be built
Camará Mexicana de la Industria de la Construcción | July 20, 2022 |

The Guadalajara Plan contemplates an investment of 15,000 million pesos and at the end of this 2022, the works will have an advance of 40%. With an investment close to 8,000 million pesos, the Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) will begin the construction of Terminal 2 (T2) at the Guadalajara international airport in 2024, which will be completed in 2026.

It is a completely new terminal building that will be built on an area of 150,000 square meters in the area currently occupied by the general aviation zone, whose hangars will be relocated and its new facilities will be completed in the second half of next year.

During a tour of the Guadalajara airport expansion and modernization works that make up the Guadalajara Plan, its director, Martín Pablo Zazueta, indicated that once T2 is completed, and with the expansion of the current facilities, the Guadalajara air terminal Guadalajara will have an infrastructure with the capacity to mobilize 40 million passengers per year.

According to the director, currently only the Mexico City airport has a higher capacity, with 45 million passengers, although, according to GAP projections, the Guadalajara airport could mobilize that number of travelers by the year 2040.

"The infrastructure will be finished in 2026, although the demand for traffic will be given gradually," he commented.

Currently, the airport terminal building (T1), has an area of 90,000 square meters, but with the expansion that is currently being carried out, its extension will grow by 40,000 square meters.

Martín Pablo Zazueta indicated that after the collapse suffered by the sector due to the pandemic, only in 2022 will the Guadalajara airport reach the traffic indicators it had in 2019, and by the end of this year they expect to reach 15 million passengers.

Meanwhile, the new general aviation zone is being built on an area of 101 hectares that the Airport Group bought from the Santa Cruz del Valle ejido and in this area, Zazueta Chávez said, the hangars of the Bank of Mexico, of the Attorney General's Office will be installed. of the Republic and that of the Mexican Air Force.

During the tour of the expansion works, the director of the Guadalajara airport indicated that with the construction of the second runway, which will have a length of 3,500 meters, the air terminal will increase its operating capacity by 60%.

He referred that in the whole country, there are only three airports with two runways; the one in Cancun whose second runway was built on a nearby piece of land that did not affect the operation; the one in Mexico City that was born with a double track and the Felipe Ángeles that was built from the beginning with a double track.

“So, the only airport where a second runway is being built while it is in operation is the Guadalajara airport; it is as if we were changing a tire while the car is running”, he deepened.
