Challenges of Guanajuato in the face of nearshoring
Cluster Industrial | March 14, 2023 |

Nearshoring, a trend that consists of bringing production closer to the territory of consumption and that is mostly managed in Foreign Trade, has gained great importance in the last year, particularly as a result of the global economic situation.

According to a study by the Inter-American Development Bank, Nearshoring will pay 78 billion dollars in exports from Latin America and the Caribbean, where Mexico represents 35 thousand 278 million dollars. Mexico takes advantage of being a neighboring country of the United States, a nation with the highest consumption and that shares more than 3,000 kilometers of border.

Luis Rojas Ávila, Director General of the Coordinator for the Promotion of Foreign Trade of Guanajuato (COFOCE), considers that Guanajuato is one of the states that have best made its policy of attracting foreign investment and, above all, preparing the infrastructure to be able to receive large scale companies.

Proof of this is that today it is the main automobile producer nationwide and is also recognized as one of the most dynamic markets in other industries such as food or logistics, or recently the aeronautical issue, Rojas Avila pointed out.

However, nearshoring poses new challenges to the Foreign Trade of Mexico and Guanajuato; a public policy must be strengthened to increase the competitiveness of companies and thus identify Mexico in the areas in which it can compete.

To successfully complete the investment initiative in the state, that is, to attract a company, three steps must be met. The first is the supply of product, followed by the joint ventures that are generated when the companies that arrive seek to ally or merge with companies already established in Mexico. Finally, the Direct Investment modality occurs when an international company decides to establish its production and/or transformation center in the Mexican Republic.

That is to say, to obtain an investment initiative, the development of the product is first requested, once it is achieved and if the quantity of the product is high for the company, the decision is made or it seems viable to move the entire assembly plant directly to Mexico.

The benefits for Guanajuato of nearshoring are enormous, because it has managed to attract companies from the aeronautical industry, the aerospace industry, industry 4.0 or companies that develop high value-added products. All this will encourage the development of a much more competitive ecosystem that goes hand in hand with new professions.

COFOCE has already started a project to strengthen competitiveness called Industry Connections, whose purpose is to present Guanajuato companies from different sectors, to generate a link, where both companies satisfy needs and thus reduce imports and promote the growth of Guanajuato suppliers.
