The municipal government of Guadalajara has the goal of repopulating the Historic Center of the city. To do this, local authorities are already working on a comprehensive program with which they seek to trigger housing development in this area of the capital of Jalisco.

According to Pablo Lemus, municipal president of Guadalajara, the intention will be to work hand in hand with private initiative to achieve the stated objective, contemplating a series of incentives for businessmen to join.

“We have worked on projects to improve the infrastructure of Zapopan and Guadalajara. But now we need to do many other things to recover the Historic Center. The first thing is to bring attractive motifs to people, mainly based on our history, our folklore, our gastronomy, and cultural motifs. But we not only need the attractions, we need people to live and coexist in the Historic Center and for this we implement a repopulation policy that is just taking off”, he said in an interview.

The Municipal President explained that the plan outlined for the repopulation of the Historic Center of Guadalajara, contemplates the intervention of four polygons. This, with the intention of respecting the cultural value that this area of the city has, and developing housing only in the places that are presented to do so.

“We have many restrictions and we also need to preserve the architectural and historical heritage of the city. Therefore, we do not intend to make apartment buildings next to the Degollado Theater or the Metropolitan Cathedral. However, we have chosen four polygons to be able to carry out this redensification policy, which are located in the surroundings of the Historic Center.

“One of them is the Glorieta de la Normal area; the second zone goes from Avenida Revolución to Niños Héroes; the third is the Agua Azul Park area; and the fourth is the one in Parque Morelos. All of them are parks that surround the Historic Center and that have the possibility, according to the partial plans and land uses, of having vertical housing”, he indicated.

Among other things, Lemus explained that within the stated objectives is to be able to promote the development of minimum housing, of around 35 square meters (m2), that satisfies the housing needs of couples without children or singles.
