Querétaro epicenter of reactivation of aerospace projects

Aerospace companies have begun to resume growth plans in Querétaro, in order to expand their production capacities; It is an industry that, in the manufacture of aerospace equipment, has not reported Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows since 2019, according to data from the Ministry of Economy.

From 1999 to March 2022, the manufacture of aerospace equipment added 980.4 million dollars of FDI in the state, 5% of the total received.

However, the last year in which this sub sector reported a positive value of foreign investment was in 2019 when it added 3.7 million dollars, in 2020 it did not register any value, in 2021 it reported -1.5 million and for the first quarter of 2022 also did not add capitals.

Prior to the 2019 investment, the closest precedent of foreign investment was in 2015 when it totaled 3.2 million dollars.

The best years in the reception of FDI for manufacturing aerospace equipment have been from 2008 to 2010, when they accumulated 698.1 million dollars. The accumulated investment in those three years represents 71.2% of the total state FDI in the subsector.

In the last week, within the framework of the meeting of the aerospace industry in Farnborough (Farnborough International Airshow) in the United Kingdom, and the tour of Governor Mauricio Kuri in Europe, companies in the industry announced growth plans in the entity.

Airbus announced the expansion of its production plant, which is located in Colón; the firm will invest 409 million pesos, as well as the creation of 200 jobs.

The French company Safran also confirmed an expansion project in the state, announcing that this year it will add 800 jobs to the 2,500 it currently has.

Similarly, Aernnova, a Spanish company, reported that it resumed its hiring, after the impact caused by the health contingency.

TechOps, Aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Center (MRO), is one of the companies that announced the expansion of its workshop at the Querétaro airport, where it plans to install a hangar with four operating lines, up from the current 16; it is estimated that in the short term it will create 320 direct jobs and 550 indirect jobs.
