What does the hybrid future of work hold?
Alto Nivel | June 20, 2022 |

The corporate consulting firm EY, through a global survey of more than 500 companies, through the EY Future Workplace Index, indicates three major trends where teamwork and collaboration are privileged and where the search for office experience should be an opportunity for connection between the teams.

The results indicate that 87% of the companies surveyed recognize a profound change in the organization of work derived from the pandemic, while 75% of those surveyed agree that offices as we knew them before will not be required in the future. .

This means that 72% of the sample currently maintain some hybrid work model scheme.

This change that today we see as something natural that occurred in less than two years, happened at an accelerated rate compared to the historical evolution of work.

Among the main conclusions of the study, we can agree that the model of the future will be hybrid and both companies and individuals agree that this will be the norm.

This leads to defining what hybrid work means: prioritizing health and safety, redesigning physical spaces, the technological infrastructure for the remote work space, as well as connecting employees with the organization and with each other.

There is no standard for this, changes in the way of working will continue to occur, not only in the hybrid, but also in roles and ways of working.

The experiences of the collaborators are fundamental. Companies must know what their employees value and need and design experiences for them, so in the future we will see how new ways of working and roles that change even more rapidly will emerge.

We will observe the gradual disappearance of repetitive jobs that can be done automatically. Today RPA (Robot Process Automation), allows the automation of tasks, which means increases in productivity and in the future the substitution of more and more tasks done by people.

This implies that in order for people's work to be maintained, they have to be retrained and/or acquire new skills.

Freelance or gig jobs will increase in number, especially among people with very specific skills and/or knowledge and in high demand (e.g., software developers).

The metaverse as a new type of office, and also as a space for conventions or for massive product launch meetings or conference cycles. The use of this technology would make the virtual experience something much closer between individuals and with a greater possibility of achieving more intimate connections.

The change in the way of working has been accelerated, however, it is dangerous to make a generalization and simplification of what the changes mean for individuals.

Among the collaborators there are different work preferences, from those who prefer the virtual modality, to those who seek more time working in the offices.

What is not an uncertainty is flexibility. According to the EY survey of employees carried out at the end of 2021 (Work Reimagined Employer Survey), 8 out of 10 collaborators want work to be flexible both in place and in hours.

The future that is being built from today demands that organizations understand the preferences and segments among their collaborators, that they be ready to offer solutions that match the needs of efficiency, productivity, but also talent attraction and retention.

A robust plan is essential, but also the ability to adapt to new changes that will continue to happen in the place and the way of working.
