Mexico and the United States approved 13 border infrastructure projects with an investment of 700 million dollars (mdd), to streamline supply chains between the two countries, as a result of the meeting that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had with his American counterpart, Joe Biden .

“Integration is underway thanks to production processes and high-level dialogues to speed up supply chains and production capacity. This in sectors such as the pharmaceutical, medical, electromobility and others”, he commented during a meeting with the United States ambassador. in the Republic, Ken Salazar.

Among the agreed infrastructure projects, the Mesa de Otay II–Otay Mesa East International Crossing stands out. It is a new port of entry with high technology to decongest the crossing system in the area and reduce review times.

Likewise, on the Chihuahua-New Mexico border, they plan to modernize the San Jerónimo-Santa Teresa crossing and its access roads, an alternative to relocate the commercial traffic that currently crosses the urban area of Ciudad Juárez-El Paso.

For her part, Michelle Lujan Grisham, governor of the state of New Mexico, reaffirmed her support at the federal level for this project. Therefore, it will give it priority with the aim of promoting international trade.

It is worth mentioning that last week the governments of both nations agreed to direct part of the land traffic to said state, a measure against the commercial blockade imposed by the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott.

One of the main challenges in the border region is the economic impact of delays at border crossings, which can generate losses of billions of dollars for Mexico and the United States, according to data from the Foreign Secretary.

It is estimated that more than five million jobs in the neighboring country to the north depend on trade with Mexico, which will be boosted by the start of infrastructure projects.

For this reason, the federal government considers it essential to streamline waiting times at crossings by improving the efficiency and optimization of ports, since more than half of total US exports to the national territory can be attributed to the four border states.
