They project a 19% growth in production and export of heavy units in Mexico
Mexico Industry | October 05, 2021 |

The National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor Producers (ANPACT) anticipates a 19.6% growth in the export of heavy vehicles from Mexico, as well as a 19.1% rise in the production of this type of units in the country, for the closing of 2021.

Although the figures do not reach those reported in 2019, the year before the pandemic and in which the industry achieved record historical figures in exports and production, they do mean an important advance in the recovery of the sector.

95% of the Mexican exports of this industry reach the US; 3% to Canada; and the rest to Colombia, Peru, Chile and Ecuador, mainly.

This year, according to ANPACT projections, a total of 138 thousand 510 units would leave Mexico to satisfy the aforementioned markets; However, it would be far from the figure achieved in 2019, in which the record of 168,687 exported vehicles was achieved.

Production reports a similar situation, because although 162 thousand 546 units would be produced, they would remain below the 202 thousand 069 manufactured in 2019.

The entry into force of the T-MEC, the recovery of the US economy and the increase in demand for consumer products, which would require a greater number of freights to move, are seen as areas of opportunity for growth in this sector.

On the other hand, this industry faces challenges such as the shortage of inputs; that of semiconductors, commented the speaker, has caused delay in the deliveries agreed by several of the companies adhered to the Association; however, none of them have stopped their production due to this situation.

In the domestic market, areas of opportunity are detected to put distributors of new units on an equal footing, versus those imported used from the United States.

And it is that while the retail sales of heavy vehicles fell 35.5% in 2020, against what was obtained in 2019; the placement of imported used vehicles reported an increase of 4.1% in the same period in Mexico.

Mexico is the first exporter of trucks in the world, the fourth exporter of heavy vehicles, the fourth producer of cargo vehicles and the tenth producer of buses globally.
