Production and marketing of motorcycles accelerates in Mexico
Mexico Industry | January 02, 2023 |

The new mobility trends have triggered the growth of different sectors such as motorcycle production, which has made Mexico the second largest market in Latin America, just below Brazil.

Before the Covid-19 health contingency, the country sold an average of between 870 and 900 thousand units per year, a figure that increased in 2022 to reach an average of one million 250 thousand units, which means that, for the first time in the country's history, more motorcycles than cars were sold in Mexico.

This result is derived from the current crisis in the automotive industry, due to the low production of assembly plants, shortage of semiconductors, agencies without inventory and high transportation costs.

The Mexican Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers and Importers (AMFIM) estimates that, from 2017 to 2021, this market increased 27%, which meant an average annual increase of 5.4%, and this 2022 closed with an increase of seven percent.

The health contingency forced this sector to meet the demand in mobility and as a work tool, since their use for distribution is one of the main reasons for acquiring them, which also translates into job creation.

The AMFIM considers that out of every 10 motorcycles sold, seven are related to work use, either for delivery applications, as well as other services that require last-mile logistics.

Likewise, Laura González, director of the Mexico International Motorcycle Show (SIMM), indicated that, during the first quarter of 2022, compared to the same period in 2021, there was an increase of more than 100% in the sale of motorcycles. for the cities of Monterrey, Guadalajara, León and Mexico City.

Currently, the main states of the Republic with the highest percentage of motorcycles are the State of Mexico with 14.6%, Jalisco with 11.1% and Mexico City with 9.8%,” added González.
