One of the main challenges for the growth of the real estate sector in Merida is infrastructure. Water supply, electricity and connectivity services are key forces for the arrival of residential, corporate and industrial investments.

Gerardo Díaz de Zavala, Undersecretary of Investment, Economic Development and Financing, shared that the current government has detected a weakness in energy matters, being one of the most expensive at the national level.

“It is a great challenge today. In the case of industrial developments, they will have to bet on the generation of this resource that their complexes need. Because the CFE (Federal Electricity Commission) already said it: it will not carry the energy. It is no longer just the poles and lines, nor the substations”, he declared.

To address this problem, President Andres Manuel López Obrador recently announced the construction of two power generation plants. Likewise, connections will be made to double the gas supply and promote industrial areas with investment potential.

In addition, he declared that they have contemplated 22 renewable energy projects that, if put into operation, the entire peninsula could be 100 percent sustainable. Some of them are wind and photovoltaic parks, which are an attractive business given the weather conditions in Yucatan.

“We have energy left over, but we need the laws to open up. It is clear to us that we have to generate the conditions suitable for investment. We work hand in hand with the federal government with great projects”.

In addition to energy infrastructure, Mérida seeks to promote its economy not only through tourism, but also through commercial cargo. The city's airport is undergoing a complete renovation and the authorities are in the planning process for the construction of a new terminal with greater capacity.
