Telephone operators began deploying their 5G networks a year and a half ago, however, nearshoring could catapult the use of this technology in Mexico, especially in the industrial part; in fact, Ericsson expects to invest $15 billion in adoption in the coming years.

According to the company's president for Northern Latin America and Central America, Chafic Nassif, 5G is beginning to consolidate in the region, since it currently has 7 million subscribers and Mexico, Brazil and Chile are the leaders in this change.

"In the case of the industry I am very optimistic, in particular in Mexico we have very specific cases, we work with mining with both 4G and 5G, technology can support worker safety, there is massive potential in the world of manufacturing, because we see that there is a phenomenon of companies that are coming to the country, for example, Tesla, many European and world companies, that are automating," he said.

In an interview with Forbes Mexico, the manager commented that of the 15,000 million dollars for Mexico, 11,000 would be for smart industry, 900 million for logistics, 2,500 million for rural activities and 600 million dollars in public services.

For Chafic Nassif, implementing 5G in industry has many benefits, from making operations safer to helping lower a company's carbon emissions, which would help their Net Zero strategy.

And it is that, he explained, currently these networks generate about 0.2% of the carbon footprint in the world, but there are cases where factories have reduced their energy consumption by up to 24% with the implementation of this technology.

However, the director of the company commented that the advance of 5G in the industry in Mexico will not only be for the companies that are arriving, such as the case of Tesla, but also for those that are already installed in the national territory.

According to Ericsson's estimates, in the next five years mobile subscriptions to 5G services in Latin America would reach 330 million, which would represent 42% of all users by 2028.

On the other hand, it is estimated that by the end of 2023, 1.5 billion subscriptions using fifth-generation technology will be registered. Derived from 249 networks compatible with this technology launched worldwide, today 35% of the population has access to 5G.
