Mexico enlists US semiconductor production
Mexicoxport | August 16, 2022 |

Mexico is preparing to take advantage of the opportunity to strengthen the supply chains of semiconductors.

In this regard, Tatiana Clouthier, head of the Ministry of Economy mentioned that Mexico not only seeks to collaborate to reduce shortage problems, but also wants to reach other markets in the United States, Canada and Central America.

It should be remembered that Mexico is the eighth producer of electronics worldwide and the sixth-largest producer of automobiles, leading to high demand for semiconductors.

During the forum "Strengthening the supply chains of semiconductors between Mexico and the United States", John Neuffer, president of the Semiconductor Industry Association, mentioned that the participation of Mexico is fundamental since it contributes 4.5% in global exports and 16% for the automotive industry.

Regarding semiconductors, John Neuffer stressed that he is following the United States initiative to boost the industry and repositioning the distribution chains related to them.

For this, Mexico is one of the partners needed to achieve the objective of manufacturing and assembling microcomponents.

The country's Undersecretary of Finance, Gabriel Yorio, said that said office is working on a tax incentive scheme for the north and southeast of the country (locate your plants in areas near the Transisthmian Corridor) to facilitate the installation of semiconductor plants. .

Of interest: Automotive industry, manufacturing and logistics, the ones that most demand space in the country

The proposed scheme is similar to the one already operating on the border with the United States, which has contributed to the relocation of companies. Although they are defining the vocation of the Isthmus, it has been anticipated that the safest thing is that it will focus on the agro-industrial and logistics part.

The entry of Taiwan, South Korea and China into the semiconductor market in the 2000s reduced production in Europe, the United States and Japan to 36%, according to data from the Boston Consulting Group and the Semiconductor Industry Association.
