More than 100,000 houses will be rehabilitated and put up for sale by Infonavit

MEXICO CITY.- In Mexico there are about 650 thousand abandoned houses for different reasons, such as lack of services or poor quality of construction materials, for which the Institute of the National Housing Fund for Workers (Infonavit) plans recover 100 thousand 345 properties, rehabilitate them and put them up for sale.

The institute's plan by the year 2024 is to enable all the missing services of these abandoned houses, as well as to improve their construction to make them more attractive and to be able to sell them.

Agreements will also be signed with the municipalities or places where they are located so that they do not lack all housing services.

Between 2000 and 2012, the granting of Infonavit credits increased. During the six-year term of 2000 - 2006, 1 million 884 thousand credits were delivered; In the following, 2006 - 2012, this amount almost doubled to 2 million 955 thousand loans. However, as collected by real estate, the little access to work centers and the failures in basic services, among other logistics problems, increased the abandonment of these houses since 2005.

When the financial crisis of 2009 arrived, these developers entered bankruptcy or began their liquidation process. In the case of the GEO company, which was able to restructure debts since 2014 but, finally, in 2018 it declared bankruptcy.

Of the 100 thousand 345 abandoned houses that are going to be recovered, 57.7% are in Mexico City, with a total of 14 thousand 892, followed by Tamaulipas, Nuevo LeónState of Mexico and Chihuahua, respectively.
