One of the industrial sectors in Tijuana that has maintained sustained growth, and on the rise after the pandemic, is that of medical products, where companies like Stryker have seen opportunities to expand.

According to Alfredo Dueñez Tovar, director of manufacturing and leader of the Stryker plants in Tijuana, it is a fact that the pandemic has generated niches of opportunity, which he expressed during his participation in the monthly meeting of the Industrial Association of the Table of Otay (AIMO), chaired by Armando Padilla Fitch.

The manager's talk was entitled “Medical industry. Innovation and future”, in which he highlighted that the company, being part of the conglomerate of companies in the medical sector of Baja California, had maintained relevant growth, however, the pandemic increased it even more.

It is a company with two divisions: surgical uniforms with a sterile barrier for invasive operations in the operating room, and operations for the reprocessing of medical products.

In this sense, Dueñez Tovar explained that collections are gathered in the United States and reprocessed in Tijuana with remanufactured product, thus avoiding waste in the market and providing a sustainable solution to the environment.

This demand that caused the health contingency due to Covid around the world, he said, was added to the health problems that the general population already presented, in such a way that the market increased the demand for a greater number of medical products. .

“It is well known that we are the fastest growing cluster; in fact, Deitac (Economic and Industrial Development of Tijuana) mentioned that investment in Baja California has grown 58%, which is why we are number one not only in Mexico, but in Latin America”, stressed the manager.

In this regard, Armando Padilla Fitch, president of the AIMO, agreed that the medical industry skyrocketed during the Covid-19 pandemic, in all its areas, as it has been an extraordinary situation worldwide.

Finally, the industrial leader said that around 30 of the 140 companies affiliated with the AIMO are dedicated to manufacturing medical products, while there is another number that carry out manufacturing contracts for medical corporations.
