July inflation in Mexico reaches 8.15%

The National Consumer Price Index (INPC) accelerated again and registered an annual variation of 8.15 percent in July of this year, pressured by the increase in the prices of potatoes and other tubers, onions, oranges, wheat flour and the white bread

According to the information presented this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), inflation registered its highest level since December 2000, when it stood at 8.96 percent.

Said increase occurs after presenting a variation of 7.65 percent in May and 7.99 percent in June.

Thus, inflation has been above the target range set by the Bank of Mexico (3 percent, +/- one percentage point) for 17 consecutive months.

The INPC result was slightly above market expectations, which estimated 8.13 percent at an annual rate, according to Citibanamex.

The underlying price index, which is the one that excludes products with high price volatility from its accounting, accelerated again and stood at 7.65 percent at an annual rate, its highest variation since December 2000, when it rose to 7.85 percent. hundred.

Inside, the prices of services were located at 4.90 percent, while the rise in the prices of merchandise was 10.07 percent.

Meanwhile, the non-core balance, which accounts for products with high price volatility, such as agricultural products or fuels, stood at 9.65 percent at an annual rate, its highest level since last January.

In a disaggregated manner, the prices of agricultural products presented a variation of 16.05 percent, while that of energy and tariffs authorized by the Government stood at 4.76 percent, this compared to the same period last year.

For its part, the Price Index of the Minimum Consumption Basket increased at a monthly rate of 0.81 percent and an annual rate of 8.66 percent.

In its comparison with the previous month, the INPC slowed down to 0.74 percent, after registering 0.84 percent the previous month.
