Automotive industry in Mexico is impacted by electromobility
Mexico Industry | March 01, 2023 |

A few days after Tesla announced the installation of a gigafactory in Mexico and given the interest shown by state and federal governments in hosting it, actions are taking shape and relevance to reach the goal of the industrial sector in terms of electric vehicle assembly ( GO).

In accordance with the sustainability objectives of the public administration, 50% of the cars assembled in our country by 2030 must be zero emissions.

Finsa -hosts 20 companies that supply auto parts for electric cars in its industrial parks nationwide-, assured that the electrification and autonomy of vehicles is one of the main trends in the automotive industry. This phenomenon will impact the entire sector in a diverse way starting with the supply, which must prepare itself for the challenges of the new dynamics dictated by the EV sector.

According to the study "Study of prospective and opportunities in electric vehicles (EVs) and the future of the automotive value chain in Mexico" of the Mexico-USA Foundation for Science (Fumec), it is expected that by 2024, vehicles will begin to be increasingly competitive in terms of market cost against traditional cars.

This trend will increase as the end of the decade approaches and, in the United States, by 2030, this type of car will predominate in the market.

Likewise, according to an analysis by PwC Strategy in 2021, EVs represented 8.2% of new car registrations in 14 world markets compared to 4.1% in 2020, that is, a growth of 50 percent was detected.

If this rate of growth is maintained and given the internal and external demands of no longer allowing vehicles that run solely on fossil fuels, Finsa assures that a slowdown in the demand for internal combustion vehicles will be observed very soon and that of EVs will increase. Therefore, it will be a priority to reconfigure the industry to meet the needs of the market.

With data from McKinsey, Finsa's analysis affirmed that said EV demand is accompanied by strong changes that the local automotive sector must resolve, such as obtaining new necessary raw materials, such as lithium, nickel and cobalt, Mainly used in batteries.

There will also be an increase in the number of suppliers that produce the new components (batteries and electric motors). Likewise, progress is being made towards a transformation of production in the facilities that already exist to put aside components, such as combustion engines, connecting rods, and cylinders, and adapt to a new supply.

Sergio Argüelles, president and CEO of Finsa, commented that in the face of these new challenges, he is already carrying out an analysis of the capacities and components that it has in relation to the new requirements, proposing new investments, searching for specialized spaces, maintenance of infrastructure, development of new products and rapprochement with customers.
