In the midst of the shortage of glass containers and the high cost of aluminum in the world, Heineken Mexico announced an investment of 1,800 million pesos for the construction of a can factory at its plant in Meoqui, Chihuahua.

The plant marks a change in the integration of supply chains and canned presentation production will grow for what this type of investment is required, said Mónica Bichara, vice president of corporate affairs at Heineken Mexico.

The directive added that to maintain circularity in this plant, companies that are suppliers of aluminum must have commitments regarding polluting emissions.

With this factory, the company will create 120 direct and 150 indirect jobs. Its construction is planned to start towards the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, and it will start operations at the end of 2024.

The Meoqui plant was inaugurated in 2018, with an investment of 500 million dollars and as part of the integration of the value chain, the glass and malt supply companies are also located in this space.

In Mexico, 40% of beer is packaged in non-returnable bottles, 23.9% in returnable bottles and 36.2% in cans, according to data from the National Chamber of the Beer and Malt Industry (Cerveceros de México).

This complex has a wastewater treatment plant, which is used for industrial uses, cleaning purposes of the facilities and irrigation of green spaces. To produce a liter of beer, 2.5 liters of water are used, when the company's goal is to use 1.9 liters, while in the brewing industry, for every liter of beer, four liters of water are usually used.

The company reiterated its goals to achieve neutrality in the use of water and zero carbon emissions by 2030, which will require a transformation in the seven plants it has in Mexico, located in Monterrey, Guadalajara, Tecate y Toluca, Navojoa, Orizaba and Meoqui.
