There are three groups of investors from China that are looking to invest in Nuevo León and in other states, some to establish themselves close to the assembly companies as part of the supply, others that are in the last stage of integration and the heavy industry companies that seek to comply. with the national content and conserve its tariff advantages.

This was commented to El Economista by Amapola Grijalva Vega, executive president of the Mexico-China Chamber of Commerce and Technology, who met with members of the Nuevo León chapter of the Coordinating Council of Women Entrepreneurs (CCME).

“Three types of companies are arriving from China to Mexico. The former are those that have established clients for years as part of a supply chain, especially for the automotive industry; They are from the auto parts industry and (they seek to establish themselves) where the headquarters of the assembly brands are, they really have little margin to decide their location, what is clear is that the majority are in the T-MEC channel, which it is the central export channel with the United States ”, he pointed out.

The second group are companies that are in the last stage of integration and are manufacturing industrialized products, destined for regional markets, making use of the Free Trade Agreements that the country has, as well as its advantageous geographical location, she explained.

The executive explained that these types of companies seek to have a central office, an operation node for the markets of the north and south of the continent, however, they have a certain degree of sophistication in their process, with a high link with China, "they tend to be located near the source of supply of its components ”.

The third group is heavy industry companies, or some that are perfecting or expanding the chains that already existed in Mexico, to comply with the degree of national integration and be able to preserve their tariff advantages in the North American market, and they are linked to the biomedical, aerospace, electrical and electronic industry, mainly.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from China to Nuevo León has increased from 2017 to 2020, going from 3.3 million dollars to 49.7 million. The most significant increase was in 2020.
