With 7.72% inflation breaks record in the first half of April

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) released the Consumer Price Index (INPC) for the first half of April, in which the annual rate of general inflation stood at 7.72%, the highest recorded since January of the year 2001.

The agency reported that the underlying price index, which does not include high volatility products, had an increase of 0.44% fortnightly and an annual one of 7.16%, and the prices of merchandise rose 0.55% and those of services 0.32%.

For its part, the non-core price index fell 0.66% at a fortnightly rate and grew 9.38% at an annual rate, where agricultural products increased 0.65%.

In contrast, energy and rates authorized by the government fell 1.70% at a fortnightly rate, due to adjustments in electricity rates within the warm season scheme in 18 cities in the country, according to the Inegi.

The products and services that most stood out for their impact on general inflation were tomatoes, which had a fortnightly variation of 16.65%; low octane gasoline, which increased 0.80% fortnightly; packaged tourist services, with 9.36%; chicken with a variation of 1.74%; and the corn tortilla with 1.14%.

On the other hand, the products and services with falling prices were electricity with a fortnightly variation of -12.31%; the onion, with -13.50%; the lemon with 17.28%; domestic LP gas, with -1.75%; and the banana, with -7.12%.

Finally, the Inegi reported that the price index of the minimum consumption basket had a fortnightly reduction of 0.01% and an annual increase of 8.29%.
