Colonia Atlampa seeks to rescue itself through Master Plan
El Sol de México | October 12, 2021 |

The neighborhood, which was an industrial zone, has problems of insecurity and abandoned buildings

The existence of unused properties without construction makes it possible to develop neighborhood recovery projects that help revitalize the Atlampa neighborhood in the Cuauhtémoc mayor's office, and highlights the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESA) in the Master Plan prepared for this zone.

Atlampa at the beginning of the last century had an industrial zone that disappeared and now presents problems of insecurity, abandonment of buildings, in addition to a deficit in schools, shops and cultural and sports centers, so the Cuauhtémoc mayor's office together with the local government seek to reactivate it.

For this, the capital administration requested CESA, the Fund for Economic and Social Development of Mexico City as well as Conacyt to carry out a joint Master Plan for its revitalization.

The proposal does not seek to return to being an industrial zone, as Vallejo already is, because it has more inclination to be a housing and services zone, said Jorge Mucino, Director of Operations of the Fund for Economic and Social Development of the City of Mexico,

The objective is repopulation and sustainable, inclusive urban development and, above all, to solve some existing problems such as the presence of irregular settlements of victims of the 1985 earthquakes.

Currently Atlampa has a deteriorated urban landscape; abandoned or underutilized real estate; streets without trees and without conditions for the mobilization of people with disabilities; insecurity and crime.

Trucks that use their streets and alleys as parking lots that obstruct visibility; insufficient green areas; deficit in education, culture, recreation, sports and commerce; as well as uneven distribution of urban equipment.

Another problem to be solved, explains Muciño, is that the Suburban Train ended up splitting the neighborhood and this urban scar must be considered in medium and long-term projects; that is, to eliminate that physical barrier to have a communication between the two blocks of the colony.

The manager indicated that if there is no urban development other than the one that currently exists, it is not advisable to develop isolated actions, there should be a comprehensive transformation process to improve security,

To put this plan into practice, all that remains is for the Secretary of Urban Development and Housing to modify the General Urban Development Program, which must be approved by the local Congress.

Once this stage has been completed, the resources to be allocated by the Government of Mexico City will be determined.
