The strong transformation of the population's consumption habits with the advancement of technology had an ally in the pandemic, where multiple industries were forced to generate a change in their business models at the risk of disappearing.

Throughout the world, data processing centers, or also called data centers, are facilities that house and maintain numerous electronic equipment that is used to maintain a network or a system of computers, information, connections and data of one or several companies. .

The growing digitalization of industries worldwide has put Mexico and specifically Querétaro at the forefront of an acceleration in the construction of hyperscale data centers.

Located in the center of the Mexican territory, Querétaro is a low seismic zone that combines ideal climatic conditions for the development of this industry that is highly intensive in energy demand with extensive telecommunications networks.

There are at least five data center megaprojects to be located in Querétaro, with expansion plans during 2022 to 2024 that will mean more than 300 million dollars in investment, according to Carolina Cortés, commercial director of the International Computer Room Experts Association (Icrea). to El Economista, at the end of 2021.

Since 2020, Equinix has been installed in the entity with its MX1 and MX2 centers, located on the Innovation Park, in the municipality of El Marqués, having invested 54 million dollars in the latter in the expansion phase planned for the period 2021 to 2022.

In August 2021, Oracle announced through its spokesperson Marcos Pupo, Oracle Cloud Senior Vice President for Latin America, that Mexico would be the next cloud region with a data center to be activated in Querétaro at the beginning of 2022.

At the end of 2021, Amazon confirmed that it will build three data centers that will function as an interconnected ring that will link to the United States in a unique project focused on innovation, where in early 2022 they would release more information about the investment, which has not yet been announced, reveal.

At the beginning of May 2022, the Brazilian company Odata inaugurated the first hyperscale datacenter in Mexico, in a 52 thousand square meter facility located on Vynmsa Querétaro Industrial Park, with an initial installed capacity of 8.4 MW that is expected to reach 32MW within four years by completing all phases of expansion.

The Brazilian Ascenty also plans to activate two massive data centers in Mexico in Querétaro. The first will occupy an area of 20,000 square meters with 21 MW of power, currently under construction in Vesta Park, while the second will have an area of 24,000 square meters with 31 MW of capacity. The company plans to invest $257 million in data center projects in Latin America next year.

Digital Bridge's Scala Data Centers also plans to open three sites in 2023, by which time it would reach a total installed capacity of approximately 340 MW regionally.

KIO Networks inaugurated the fifth Data Hall of its Querétaro Campus Data Center in February 2022, which represents an addition of 20% in megawatts of the current total capacity, in a space equivalent to three soccer fields, since 2006 when the company started operations in the entity.

These examples corroborate that the main challenge for the entity is to maintain its position of support for investment and manage with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) the search for new projects that allow the generation of the necessary energy in the industrial parks that can house the data centers to come.
